My name is Dominic Power and i’ve been an Actor and an Acting Coach for over 30 years. And most recently an award winning self taught independent filmmaker.
Maybe like you, my lack of acting work drove me crazy and I was on the brink of giving it all up. But I instead I decided to try and take back control by attempting to make my own work. I knew nothing about filmmaking, cameras, lights or sound, but the love i had for my craft would not let that stop me!
I bought the best dslr camera that i could afford and started from there.
This was only 10 years ago… But If it was today… I’d have just used my phone! And got practically the same results!
When I first started, I had no actors to film or anyone for that matter… So id film myself… (This is a few years before the “Self-Tape”phenomenon btw…) This was a revelation… And I could practice my craft… even when resting! I just wished the technology around today was around when I was starting out.
As a younger actor my biggest concern was…

Do I need to have XYZ before starting?
If you have a camera on your phone, and access to a closed window... You're good to go.
Obviously things get more fun as we introduce new gear...But it's not essential. I would invest in a lav mic of some kind... these can cost as little as $14...
